Presentation:
The speaker for this meeting is Mr. Dan Ryan, Project Coordinator for the Illinois Public Pension Fund Association (IPPFA). As most of us know, the Social Security Fairness Act (HR82) was signed into law by President Biden on January 5, 2025. The law repealed Social Security’s Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), which provisions reduced Social Security benefits for retirees receiving firefighter (and other) pensions.
Mr. Ryan will offer an overview of Social Security, how this new law changes the landscape for firefighters, the impact of these changes on how a person might choose to claim Social Security benefits, and some insights related to Social Security in the current Federal environment.
